Notes

*Modifications by Grandma for finishing them in the crock pot:* Grandma says she makes the meatballs and the sauce and freezes them. The day she is serving them, she places the meatballs and sauce in the crock pot and cooks on high until everything is hot. Then she removes the meatballs and thickens the sauce on the stove (in another pan). With a wire whisk or electric mixer, mix the flour into the sour cream until smooth. Then slowly add to the gravy until thickened. Replace all in the crock pot on low until ready to serve.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, soak bread cubes in milk. Melt butter in a skillet and saute onions until golden. In another bowl, combine all of the seasonings and set aside. Press milk from bread and combine with onions. Mix the seasonings, ground beef, and eggs. Form 50 1 1/2 inch balls. Chill (optional). In a skillet, melt 2 tbsp. butter. Brown meatballs and remove them. Prepare sauce in the same skillet. Saute garlic for 2 minutes. Mix flour with broth and add to skillet with gravy seasoning, tomato paste, and bitters. Stir until thick and reduce heat. Slowly add sour cream and dill. Add meatballs. Heat through but do not boil.
  2. *If doubling, don't double spices; just add a little more to taste.*
