Combine flour, salt, cornstarch, and alum in a 2-quart glass bowl. Gradually stir in water and oil until almost smooth.
Microwave on high for 4 1/2 to 5 minutes or until the mix is very thick, stirring every minute (the mixture will be very lumpy).
Cool enough to handle. Knead on a countertop until smooth. Divide dough and knead in coloring as desired.
Store separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator. Keeps for months.
